Has it really been over a year since I last blogged? Wow! And of course my last post is all about how I’m going to write again and blog again and all the stuff I keep telling myself. Well, I’m not doing that this time. I’m telling it as it really is. My writing is on a temporary slow-down. I won’t say complete hiatus because I do intend to keep working on it. However, I’m fully aware that school is my life right now and it’s definitely taking precedence over everything else. When last I blogged I was still at my community college. Well, now I’ve graduated from there (Yay!) and moved on to a “real” university. I’m taking five classes this semester and six next. Yeah, I’m gonna be busy.
But that doesn’t mean you won’t hear from me at all. I’m going to try to continue to blog regularly about whatever the heck I feel like talking about. It will probably still be writing/book related since well, it’s me. Stay tuned and feel free to comment.
Yeah, I know I disappeared for a while there. I did get some more writing done even though I didn’t blog about it. So that’s good. However, back in January my asthma flared up something fierce. Naturally I wasn’t feeling well. I’m fine now, but my battle to breathe got me behind on my writing once again. *sigh* My biggest issue seems to be forcing myself to write even if I don’t always feel like it. I go to work when I don’t want to. I go to school when I don’t want to. I need to learn to write even if all I want to do is sleep. lol
I’d hit a wall with Olivia’s story, so I’ve started the opening scene over. When I first started Olivia’s story I started it for NaNoWriMo in 2009. If you know anything about NaNoWriMo then you know it’s a crazy mad rush to get as much written as possible. Not surprising, the original opening to Olivia’s story is also rather rushed. I found that it re-writing that scene is really helping me to unblock a lot and giving me a little more insight into Oliva, her cat Drac, her mother and her relationship to each of them.
My plan is to get back on track this coming Tuesday. Tuesday is a great writing day for me because I don’t have class and I don’t have to work. My day is wide-open until I do my volunteer work in the evening.
So that’s all I have to say for now. See you again on Tuesday. 🙂
My new laptop is in. My desk is set up. And I’m ready to jump back into my story. I’m going back to the story I started back in 2009 for my first NaNoWriMo. I’ve previously referred to it here as WIP #2, from now on it’s Olivia’s story. That’s not a final title, merely a working one. Without further delay, here I go…

At least hopefully I’ll be getting a new computer. lol It seems that every laptop I pick is out of stock at Best Buy. *sigh* Just my luck. Anyway…on to the good news…
I’ve joined RWA!!!! For those not in the know, RWA is short for the Romance Writers of America (www.rwa.org). Strictly speaking I write YA, but RWA is a great resource for all writers. I’m very excited to be a part of this fabulous organization. Because I write YA I’ve also joined the special interest YA chapter, YARWA (www.yarwa.com). I received a wonderful welcome from everyone and I can’t wait to get to know all of the other members.
I’ve just been informed that my new computer should be here next week. Yay! I’ll finally be able to get back into my writing once I have a laptop without a rolling screen. And with that I’ll leave you. Now that the Christmas season is over I’ll try to get back into blogging regularly again and letting you know how things are going with my writing.
Until next time…
I’ve surpassed 10k words! Yay! In fact I’m at 11,366 right now. Naturally I should be much further than that, but I don’t care. I’ve gotten more word count than last year and I still have 2 weeks to go. This has me very excited. I’m still not 100% sure that I’ll hit that magical 50k but I already foresee getting much further with this story than my last one.
Unfortunately I’ve reached the point in my story where I feel like I’m writing crap and it was a horrible idea to write about. lol Thankfully I know enough authors to know that everyone goes through that phase. So even though I still feel like it’s stupid I’m working through it.
One more exciting thing….. Since I have already beat last year’s word count I went ahead about bought myself the NaNoWriMo participant t-shirt. I can’t wait to get it. 🙂

Ok I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this picture, but since one of the authors I follow posted a similar picture, I just have to reciprocate today. 🙂
This just proves it. I have to write because it was meant to be.
I spent most of yesterday word warring with my friend Tami. Let me tell ya, it was great for my word count. Yesterday alone I wrote 3304. I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think I’ve ever written that much in a single day before. A few more good days like that and I’ll be caught up in no time. 🙂
For those of you unfamiliar with word wars, here’s how it works. Two (or more) people set a designated time for writing, say from :15 to :30. For those 15 minutes you just write, don’t stop to edit, don’t let yourself get distracted, just write. At the end of the 15 minutes (or however long you designate), everyone compares word count to see who did the best. I don’t know if it’s the time limit or just the competition, but I get my best word count in by word warring. Tami nearly always beats me, but that’s ok. 🙂 I’m just always excited by how much I get written in such a short time.
Today I’m awake far earlier than I’d have chosen on my own (got a sick pup at home who needs supervision) so I’m going to try to get some good word count in this morning. I might try Write or Die (writeordie.com). It’s another tool for keeping an easily distracted writer focused. I’ve heard great things about it.

I really, really did not want to have 3 WIP’s going at once, but it’s happened anyway. I truly believe in starting fresh for NaNoWriMo, so even though I did not get last year’s NaNo novel done before November, I started a new one anyway. I even have a tentative title for my story this year. The working title is Legend of the Wooden Warriors. I’m not sure how catchy that is, but it’s something.
This is my second year participating. Even though I’m not doing all that fabulous at it, I’m still really excited to be writing again. I even took two weeks off from work. You’d think that would make the words flow, but alas I’ve had one distraction after another. And yes, I freely admit that that’s an excuse and I need better discipline. I’m working on it, I swear. 🙂 I’ll try to pop in every now and then to let whomever may be reading this know how I’m doing.

Yesterday was not as stellar a writing day as Tuesday. And today is well non-existent (woke up with a massive headache). Yesterday the words just didn’t want to come. I know that’s going to happen sometimes, but I need to make sure I don’t start using it as an excuse. Part of the reason for talking about my writing publicly like this is to keep me at it. I figure if I talk about it then I’ll be accountable to it.
I know in the end the only person who matters in this writing venture is me. Writing is my dream and it’s up to me to succeed or not. The power is in my hands to do something about this.
